In this course for VASCD and Illinois ASCD, George Couros will discuss the importance of changing pedagogies while identifying the “core” values we need to focus on so that we can ensure our communities find success both in an academic setting, as well as embracing the innovator’s mindset both in and out of school.
Each week, George will focus on the four core elements (Building Relationships, Learner-Driven Practice, Empowering Learners, and Becoming Master Learners) and will provide practical ideas on how this can be implemented while adapting to lead conversations with the group to address current needs. One of the most important elements of this course is that educators will be able to come together to learn with George, as well as other members of the cohort.
The four weeks will be separated into the following focus areas, but each week will be adapted to participant needs. Sessions are live and interactive; recordings will be available to watch at your convenience. Each session lasts 60-90 minutes.
Week 1: The Power of Relationships in Any Learning Space, January 19 at 3:30
Reflect on the power of relationships to support student learning and wellbeing and to create a foundation for innovative teaching and learning practices in any learning environment. Learn concrete strategies to ensure that all learners know that their contributions are valued in inclusive learning environments.
Week 2: Focusing in on Learner-Driven, Evidence- Informed Practice, January 25 at 5:30
Understand critical differences between databased decision making and being learner-driven and evidence-informed. Develop new and better ways to determine the impact of authentic teaching and learning on student learning using multiple means of evidence to ensure that student learning is relevant, authentic and meaningful.
Week 3: Creating Empowering Learning Experiences for all Learners, February 4 at 4:30
Articulate the differences between engagement and empowerment and consider how by empowering students, you can ensure they are further engaged in learning. Explore connections between student empowerment and deeper learning that is both authentic while meeting curriculum standards.
Week 4: Master Learner, Master Educator, February 11 at 3:30
Explore the importance of collegial relationships and professional learning communities in both a local and global setting. Identifying what strategies work best for students from the viewpoint of a learner, while identifying opportunities to share with colleagues to elevate the profession as a whole. Show examples of different types of learning (for, about, and with), identify the difference, why they are essential, and strategies for each.
